Over time our teeth may be damaged due to poor hygiene practices, smoking and, drug abuse. Some types of medication lead to teeth deterioration. These factors may cause tooth loss and discoloration. Dental implants involve replacing a tooth or teeth for patients with missing or damaged teeth, thus improving their quality of life. The process is relatively simple, and after recovery, the patient can resume their everyday lives. Below are a few dos and don’ts you need to follow after treatment;

1. Foods

If you get full mouth reconstruction, it may take you a while to get used to your new teeth. You are advised not to eat for the first two hours after the implantation surgery. After the treatment, you need to eat soft foods for the first few weeks. A balanced diet with foods rich in Vitamin A and C and low in sodium will help in a speedy recovery. Some recommended foods include soups, scrambled eggs, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Avoid hard and sticky foods that may injure your gum as it heals. Hot beverages such as tea and coffee may burn your mouth because the numbing and pain medications make you more prone.

2. Alcohol and Smoking

After the surgery, you will need to take some antibiotics to prevent infections. Drinking alcohol interferes with the effectiveness of these medicines and may lead to delayed recovery. If you smoke before the time for recovery has lapsed, you run the risk of having infections, delayed healing, and dental implant failure. It is advisable to hold off on any drinking or smoking, especially within the first week, to allow for proper healing. The dental surgeon will inquire about your smoking habits and alcohol use during your consultation. If you are a regular smoker, your doctor may advise on how you can curb the urge to smoke after the implantation. Dental implants are an investment, and smoking may discolor your new set of teeth leading to more expenses in the future.

3. Exercise

You should avoid vigorous and excessive exercises and heavy lifting for about a week after the treatment. When you do too much during this recovery time, your body cannot entirely focus on healing, leading to swelling of the gum and bleeding.

4. Rest

As with any surgery, rest is essential for quick recovery. Getting full mouth reconstruction is a life-changing experience, and you will need to take some time off work to heal. Ensure you get enough blood flow to your head by lying on your back and using pillows to support your head. This ensures that sufficient blood will flow to your head, reducing swelling and excessive bleeding.

5. Medication

Before the dental implant surgery, you will be put under local anesthesia. The numbness will begin to wear off post-surgery, which may lead to some discomfort. The doctor will prescribe some pain relief medication that must be taken as instructed. You should always take medicine as advised to avoid overdosing and counter any discomfort.

6. Hygiene

As much as oral hygiene is important, you will need to put off brushing and flossing until your dentist gives you the go-ahead. This is because your gums are still tender and prone to bruising and bleeding. The implants also need to settle before regular brushing is resumed. You should rinse with warm water and salt, especially after meals.

7. Follow-up appointments

You may be required to have more follow-up appointments for full mouth reconstruction than other dental implant surgeries. You need to go to all the scheduled appointments so that the doctor can check on your healing progress and any signs of concerns. It is easier for the oral surgeon to notice and treat any problems that may arise during the scheduled visits.

8. Doctor’s Instructions

You must follow the instruction you will be given by the doctor correctly. The instructions are geared toward faster healing so that you can resume your everyday life as soon as possible.

Dental implants are a luxury to many due to cost. You will have invested a substantial amount in getting your new teeth, so it is vital to take care of them. Refraining from harmful habits that may affect your recovery time and teeth will help you maintain the teeth for a long time. After you have fully recovered and the doctor has given you the green light, you can have new food experiences.
