How to Avoid Car Accidents on a Family Road Trip

Few experiences are as memorable or touching as going on your first family road trip. Between bonding with your children and exploring new places, you and your loved ones are sure to have a blast.

The last thing you would want while you’re out adventuring is to get into a car accident and need to start thinking about filing a claim. While working with a personal injury lawyer can streamline that process if need be, you’re better off taking steps to avoid a crash completely.

Before you hit the road with your family, consult the guide below. This will help you stay safe and decrease your chances of getting into a collision with another driver.

3 Helpful Tips to Keep Your Family Road Trip Free of Car Accidents

Make Sure Everything Is Settled Before You Hit the Road

Every parent inevitably experiences it: you finally settle into the car and start driving. After a few minutes, your child(ren) starts complaining that they want something. It could be food, a drink, a bathroom break, a toy….it doesn’t matter. All you know is, suddenly, you’re trying to manage the needs of your children while also paying attention to the road in front of you.

This type of circumstance is more than just a little annoying. It can also be incredibly dangerous for your family and everyone else on the roads. If you’re distracted trying to get your child to settle down while you’re driving, you’re more likely to get into an accident.

To avoid this issue, try to address all potential needs before getting into the car. Make sure every child uses the bathroom before leaving. Give them their snacks once they’re settled into the backseat, and make their toys or technological devices easily accessible. Once they have everything, remind them that you need to focus on the road and driving, so if they think they’re going to need anything else, they should let you know before you start moving.

Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Part of the adventure behind a road trip is the possibility of discovering unknown places and enjoying the feeling of “getting lost” somewhere new. With that said, though, if you really have no idea where you are or where you’re going, you could end up facing trouble. Struggling to see street signs or figure out where you’re heading could leave you vulnerable to veering out of lanes, missing stop signs or street lights, or cause you to go above or below the required speed limit.

Review your map before you leave, and set your GPS ahead of time. If you do still get lost, pull over where it’s safe and take time to revisit your route before getting back on the road.

Don’t Push It if You’re Tired

Far too often, people push themselves to stay on the road longer than they should simply because they’re itching to get to their destination as soon as possible. But driving while fatigued can have serious consequences. Not only do you run the risk of falling asleep at the wheel and potentially veering off the side of the road, but it can decrease your reflexes and response time.

As such, you’re less likely to act appropriately in an unexpected scenario. For example, if someone in front of you stops short, you’re far less likely to hit the brakes in time to avoid rear-ending them if you’re exhausted.

Enjoy Your Family Vacation

By following the guide above, you’re most likely to stay safe on the roads. That way, you can avoid any unwanted accidents and simply enjoy time with your family.
